Many people go to A&E when they could be treated just as well, and probably quicker, at a minor injuries unit. In A&E staff must give priority to serious and life threatening conditions, so if you go there with a minor injury you may have to wait longer to be seen. In these kinds of cases, it is much better to go along to your local minor injuries unit.

Haltwhistle War Memorial Hospital Minor injuries units are able to treat patients for a wide range of less serious injuries such as:

  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Head injury / fall
  • Foreign body in eye
  • Lacerations / cuts / abbrasions
  • Emergency Contraception
  • Infected Finger / toes (paronychia)
  • Minor sprains e.g ankle
