  • Major accident or trauma
  • Severe uncontrollable bleeding
  • Chest Pains
  • Stroke

  • Sepsis

When to call 111?

  • Your GP surgery is closed and you need healthcare advice
  • You don’t know who to call for medical help.

Pharmacy

Don't wait until you feel worse, even if it is just a cough or cold, you can consult your pharmacist before it gets more serious. They have trained technicians available to help manage minor illnesses and are available as a first port of call and can advise if you need more urgent medical assistance.

NHS 111 Online

111 online is a fast and convenient alternative to the 111 phone service and provides an option for people who want to access 111 digitally.

Your needs will be assessed and you will be given advice about whether you need:

  • Treat yourself at home
  • Go to a Primary Care Centre

If you need face to face medical attention you may be asked to attend a Primary Care Centre.

Click here to access NHS 111 online or call 111 to speak to a staff member.

Visit a Minor Injuries Unit

Minor injuries units are able to treat patients for a wide range of less serious injuries such as sprains, cuts and grazes. Many people go to A&E when they could be treated just as well and probably quicker at a minor injuries unit.

In A&E staff must give priority to serious and life-threatening conditions, so if you go there with a minor injury you may have to wait longer to be seen. In these kinds of cases, when the GP surgery is closed, it is much better to go along to your local minor injuries unit:

Haltwhistle War Memorial Hospital, Westgate, Haltwhistle, NE49 9AJ Telephone: 0344 811 8111 .

Minor Injuries hours open Monday - Sunday 08:00 - 17:00
